Steve Neves, professor of art, draws inspiration from a large number of sources including nature, popular culture, art history, mythology, engineering, and the Bible.
Accordingly, the artwork he produces is divergent and difficult to categorize. Neves tries to avoid imposing artificial regulations that might limit his work to a specific genre, rather he allows ideas to develop freely from the various sources that inspire him. His art frequently includes the appropriation of figures from historical artworks, use of non-traditional materials and the reinterpretation of myth and stereotype.
Neves received his B.F.A. from Stephen F. Austin State University in 2000 and his M.F.A. from the University of Houston in 2004. He teaches a variety of classes, including sculpture, drawing, printmaking, and design. He approaches teaching with the same curiosity and vigor with which he produces art.
Neves hopes to impart creative fearlessness to his students. Most of his free time is spent, quite happily, chasing his kids around the house.
